Most safety boot brands treat wide fit as a special request. You find the boot you want, then discover the wide version comes in three sizes, two colours, and none of the features you needed. Tiger King works the other way around. We build on a roomier last as standard across every style, which means the fit is not an option you have to hunt for. Here is why we made that choice and what it means for your feet.

The Problem With "Standard Width"

Most work boots are built on a last sized to fit the middle of the market. That works reasonably well for a lot of people and poorly for everyone else. Workers with wider feet get pushed toward specialty lines that are harder to find, carry fewer options, and often cost more.

What happens next is the real issue. People buy the boot that fits in length and accept that it pinches, or they size up and end up with a boot that is too long and lets the heel slip. Neither is a good outcome, and both get worse over a ten hour shift.

Fit Is a Safety Issue, Not a Comfort Preference

It is easy to file fit under comfort and move on. That undersells it.

  • Circulation. A boot that compresses the forefoot restricts blood flow. Reduced circulation means colder feet, reduced sensation, and slower reaction when you step on something you should not have.
  • Fatigue and focus. Foot pain is distracting. Distraction on a job site is how incidents happen. A worker thinking about their feet is not thinking about the load overhead.
  • Blisters and skin breakdown. Friction from a poorly fitting boot creates blisters, blisters become open wounds, and open wounds in a dirty work environment become infections. This is a routine cause of lost time.
  • Balance. A heel that slips inside the boot changes how you load your foot on uneven ground and on ladder rungs.

None of this is exotic. It is the everyday cost of boots that do not fit, and it is why we treat the last as a safety decision.

What "Roomier Last" Actually Means

The last is the form a boot is built around. It determines the shape of the interior, not just the length. Our last gives more volume through the forefoot and toe box while keeping the heel cup snug, which is the combination that matters. Room where your foot needs to spread, hold where your foot needs to stay put.

Because it is built into the last rather than added as a width option, it carries across the whole line. Our Chelsea boots, our mid-cut lace boots, our waterproof boots, and our lightweight safety shoes are all built on it. You do not lose features to get the fit.

The Toe Cap Question

The toe box is where most safety boots go wrong for wider feet, because the protective cap is a fixed shape and it does not stretch. A leather upper will break in and give a little. A composite toe cap will not give at all, ever.

This is why toe cap volume has to be designed in rather than broken in. If the cap presses on your toes in the store, it will press on your toes in eighteen months. Our composite caps are shaped to the wider last rather than dropped into a standard boot, which is the difference between a boot that accommodates your foot and one that simply contains it.

Who This Helps

Obviously it helps people who already know they have wide feet. Less obviously, it helps a much larger group: people who have never worn a properly fitting work boot and have no baseline to compare against. If your entire experience of safety footwear is boots that hurt for the first month, you may have assumed that is normal. It is not.

It also helps people whose feet change through the day or the season. Feet swell over a shift, swell more in heat, and take up more room with heavy winter socks. A boot with volume to spare stays comfortable through all of that. A boot fitted exactly at nine in the morning does not.

Getting Your Size Right

Because our last runs roomier than most safety footwear, sizing is worth a moment of attention rather than ordering out of habit. The short version: size down half a size from your measured size. If you measure a 10, order a 9.5. If you have genuinely wide feet, stay at your measured size, because the extra room is exactly what you have been looking for.

Measure both feet at the end of the day, in the socks you actually wear on the job, and buy for the larger foot. Your heel should sit firmly in the heel cup with about a thumb's width at the toe, and you should be able to move your toes without your heel lifting.

If you are between sizes or you are ordering for a crew, get in touch before you order and we will walk through it with you. It is a much cheaper conversation than an exchange.

Tiger King Size Chart

These are the sizes we currently make in each style. Remember the half-size-down rule before you read across: if you measure a 10 and have standard-width feet, the size you want from this chart is 9.5.
