Every piece of CSA certified safety footwear carries a set of symbols, usually printed or stamped on the boot and repeated on the box. Those symbols are the actual certification claim. Everything else, including the product page you are reading right now, is marketing. This guide explains what each symbol means, so you can look at a boot and know exactly what it has been tested for.

Why the Symbols Matter More Than the Description

A product listing can say almost anything. The symbol on the boot means the footwear has passed a specific laboratory test under CSA Z195, the Canadian standard for protective footwear. If a boot claims a protection level in its description but does not carry the corresponding symbol, treat the description as unverified. This is the single most useful habit you can build when buying work boots.

Green Triangle: Grade 1 Toe and Puncture Protection

The green triangle is the one most Canadian job sites are looking for. It certifies two things at once:

  • A protective toe cap tested to withstand a 125 joule impact, the highest level in the CSA standard
  • A puncture-resistant sole plate tested to withstand 1200 newtons of penetration force

If your site says "green triangle boots required," this is what they mean. Construction, industrial manufacturing, utilities, mining, and heavy equipment work almost always specify it. Every Tiger King style carries the green triangle.

Yellow Triangle: Grade 2 Toe and Puncture Protection

The yellow triangle certifies a lighter-duty version of the same two protections: a toe cap tested to 90 joules rather than 125, along with puncture resistance. It suits environments where impact hazards exist but are limited, such as light warehousing or some commercial settings.

Grade 2 is legitimate protection, not a lesser imitation. It is simply rated for less force. If your hazard assessment calls for Grade 1, Grade 2 does not substitute.

White Square With Orange Omega: Electrical Shock Resistant

The white square containing the Greek letter omega marks ESR, or electrical shock resistant, footwear. ESR soles are tested at 18,000 volts at 60 Hz for one minute in dry conditions with no current passing through.

Two limitations are worth understanding clearly. First, this is secondary protection. It protects you if you accidentally step on something live. It is not equipment for intentionally working on energized systems. Second, moisture defeats it. Wet boots or wet feet conduct electricity and the protection is substantially reduced. Every Tiger King style is ESR rated, and every one of those caveats still applies.

Yellow Square With Green SD and Grounding Symbol: Static Dissipative

Static dissipative footwear is designed to reduce the buildup of static electricity on the wearer while still providing some electrical resistance. It is specified in electronics manufacturing, some pharmaceutical and chemical environments, and anywhere a static discharge could damage components or ignite something.

Static dissipative is not the same as ESR and the two are not interchangeable. If your workplace specifies SD, ESR footwear does not satisfy the requirement, and the reverse is also true.

Red Square With Black C: Conductive

Conductive footwear does the opposite of ESR. It is designed to allow static to drain away through the sole as quickly as possible, and is specified in environments handling explosives or highly flammable materials where any static buildup is dangerous.

Conductive footwear offers no electrical shock protection at all. Never substitute it where ESR is required.

Fir Tree Symbol: Chainsaw Protection

A white label with a green fir tree indicates the footwear has been tested for chainsaw cut protection. Forestry and arborist work specifies this. General construction and industrial footwear, including ours, does not carry it.

How to Read a Boot in Ten Seconds

Pick up the boot and look at the tongue, the shaft lining, or the insole. You are looking for:

  • A triangle, and what colour it is. Green means Grade 1, yellow means Grade 2.
  • A white square with an omega, which means ESR.
  • Any additional symbol for SD, conductive, or chainsaw protection, if your work requires those.

If you cannot find a symbol at all, the boot is not CSA certified, whatever the listing says.

What Tiger King Carries

Every Tiger King boot and shoe carries the green triangle for CSA Grade 1 impact and puncture protection, and the white square with omega for ESR electrical shock resistance. All styles are metal free, which means the toe cap and the puncture plate are composite rather than steel. That is what makes ESR rating possible in the first place, and it is why our boots do not conduct heat, cold, or set off metal detectors.

If you are specifying footwear for a crew, ask workers to check the symbols on the boot rather than the receipt. It takes ten seconds and it is the only verification that means anything.
