Electricians, utility workers, and anyone who works around electrical hazards see boots labeled ESR or EH—but what do these ratings actually mean? Are they real protection or marketing terminology? How much voltage can they handle? If you work in electrical fields, understanding these ratings is essential for recognizing genuine protection versus misleading claims.

ESR: Electrical Shock Resistant (Canadian Standard)

ESR is the Canadian designation for electrical hazard protection in footwear, governed by CSA Z195 standards. ESR-rated boots are tested and certified to withstand 18,000 volts at 60 Hz for one minute with no current flow or leakage in dry conditions. The CSA White Square symbol with the Omega (Ω) symbol indicates ESR certification. ESR protection works by providing electrical insulation between a live circuit and the ground, preventing current from flowing through your body to the earth. ESR boots are secondary protection—they're designed to protect you if you accidentally step on a live wire, not as primary protection for intentional contact with electrical systems.

EH: Electrical Hazard (American Standard)

EH is the American designation for electrical hazard protection, governed by ASTM F2413 standards. EH-rated boots are tested to withstand 18,000 volts at 60 Hz for one minute—the same voltage threshold as ESR. The testing methodology differs slightly between standards, but the protection level is equivalent. EH boots provide secondary protection against electrical shock in dry conditions.

What ESR/EH Actually Protects Against

Accidental contact with live wires (stepping on exposed wiring)

Electrical ground hazards in wet environments

Secondary protection if your primary insulation fails

       Protection in dry conditions only

Critical Limitations of ESR/EH Boots

Wet feet eliminate protection: If your feet or boots are wet, ESR/EH protection is significantly reduced or eliminated. Moisture conducts electricity, bypassing the boot's insulation. This is the most important limitation—wet conditions defeat the protection. These are secondary, not primary protection: ESR/EH boots don't protect you if you grab a live wire with your hand or work intentionally with electrical systems. They only protect against accidental foot contact. High voltage is still dangerous: 18,000 volts is the testing threshold, but electrical hazards exist across a wide voltage range. Lower voltage can still cause injury. Non-conductive soles are critical: Many ESR/EH boots use composite (non-metal) soles because metal conducts electricity. Steel-toed electrical work boots must use composite toes, never steel.

When You Need ESR/EH Rated Boots

  • Electrician work with live circuits
  • Utility work around power lines
  • Electrical maintenance and repair
  • Work in wet environments with electrical hazards
  • Any environment where you could accidentally contact electrical conductors

Tiger King ESR-Rated Boots

Tiger King ESR-rated boots combine certified electrical hazard protection with composite toes (non-conductive), durability, and comfort. They meet CSA Z195 standards for Canadian electrical work. Remember: ESR boots provide secondary protection only. Follow all electrical safety protocols, maintain dry feet when possible, and never treat these boots as primary protection for intentional electrical contact. They're insurance against accidents, not equipment for working live circuits.
